My new TV plays color television, but DVD's in black and white.?

I'm hoping someone else has had this same problem and there is a simple solution. I have no cable box, the DVD player is attached straight to the TV with the red and white plugs, and I have switched them around every way I know how. I'm admittedly not very literate in terms of technology and I appreciate any help.
